オハイオ州の学校で行われた実験では、一つのクラスには読みやすいフォント、Helveica及びArialを使用した教材を、もう一つのクラスには「読 みづらい」フォントの教材を配布し、その教材をもとに数週間に渡り授業を行ったそうだ。最後に試験を行ったところ、化学以外はどの科目も「読みづらい」 フォントの教材を配布されたクラスの方が格段に成績が良かったとのこと。
「流れの悪い」、つまり学習しづらい教材は、情報をより深く、より抽象的に、より慎重に処理しようとする働きがあり、理解度を上げることになるのだという。これらは効果的な学習に不可欠であり、最終的には長期記憶を養うとのこと。
